Although the name seems to link this condition with the heart, heartburn is not related to problems with the heart. Frequent Heartburn Problem
The name “heartburn” is a bit of a misnomer, as your heart is not affected at all. Frequent heartburn is a problem of your digestive system. The “burn” part of the name is all too accurate. When you have heartburn, you have a burning sensation in your chest, usually behind your breastbone, and up your throat. This burning sensation is your stomach acids going up your esophagus. This annoying and obtrusive burning can make life miserable for anyone afflicted. This happens often after eating and can go on for hours, making sleeping a difficulty and leading a normal life practically impossible.
Knowing If You Are Having Chronic Heartburn
You have that burning, bitterly foul taste in your mouth again. You feel cramped, bloated and feel as if you swallowed a bottle of Tabasco sauce. You wonder if inserting the garden hose into your mouth and turning it on might – JUST might – put out the burn inside. If this only happens a few times a year, you have regular heartburn. If this happens more than three times a week for two weeks, you may have chronic heartburn, called Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD).
